American Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Strike in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense official, the American military carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
