Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
