Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh playlist titled Relaxed Breakthrough. In essence, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but features several key adjustments:
- Each team has only 8 real players, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions performed by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Only two maps are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for players looking for alternative methods to have fun with the game. However, if video games has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, many BF6 fans are mad.
Community Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," says another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," while another details all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."
However, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this game all the time. Let them strike a balance," states another. A response via social media clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," and someone else praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Concerns and Community Input
Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase queue times even longer for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the player base compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should the development team has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
