Cameroonian Political Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Action Over Post-Election Violence, Authorities Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has declared that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he incited "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during confrontations between security forces and opposition supporters since the presidential election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he was the true winner, a statement rejected by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by security personnel on protesters have concerned the world leaders, with the UN, African Union and EU urging caution.

Official's Claims

On Tuesday, the interior minister charged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he labeled "illegal" protests leading to the loss of lives, and also criticised him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He added that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, won the October 12 presidential election with a majority of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the official announcement to try him, but he had previously stated that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

Following the vote count, he reported that armed men opened fire on demonstrators present near his house in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 individuals.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the interior minister revealed that an inquiry would be started into violent incidents before and after the announcement of the vote outcome.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he stated, without offering a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the confrontations.

Nji further mentioned that several members of the law enforcement also sustained significant wounds.

Current Situation

While the interior minister insisted the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators remain active in various areas of the nation, especially in urban centers, where protesters mounted obstructions on that day, and burnt tires on the roads.

Experts alert that the election-related unrest could push the nation into a governmental instability.
