Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Backlash
Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
