Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
