International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel accompanied members of Hamas into zones of Gaza currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Handover

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is required to hand over the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has agreed to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far handed back the bodies of fifteen of those taken hostage but none in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in locations beyond the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased past the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a representative for the organization.

She added: “Those involved to the conflict determined the procedures of the mission and delegated the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

The official additionally explained: “The ICRC was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

As the 48-hour deadline approached, Hamas, accompanied by the ICRC, teamed up with teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for bodies beyond the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use heavy machinery and trucks in the operation.

Challenges in Locating Captive Bodies

The search for the remains of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. Yet, the effort to find the remains has proved difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, as per health officials, at least ten thousand residents are listed as missing, buried under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Body Location

Hamas has stated it does not know the exact whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its teams that had been detaining the hostages and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization knew the locations of the remains. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Talks

Although the US president has conceded that some of the bodies are hard to reach, he said that “the rest they can return now and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”
