Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
