UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
