The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
